Actor Kevin Spacey said Monday that he did not reveal his sexuality earlier in life because of a complicated relationship with his father.

Spacey, 63, claimed while testifying in Manhattan federal court in a civil suit brought against him by “Star Trek” actor Anthony Rapp, the New York Post reported. Rapp accused Spacey of sexually abusing him when he was underage. The Oscar-winning actor claimed he had no recollection of the events Rapp mentioned, and then came out as gay. The latter admission resulting in widespread backlash.

Spacey testified that he is not a “fraud” for not coming out prior to Rapp’s accusations going public, the NY Post continued. He blamed his white supremacist, neo-Nazi father for being the reason why he didn’t come out earlier in life.

“I have never talked about these things publicly,” Spacey told the court. “My father was a white supremacist and a neo-Nazi. My father used to yell at me about the idea I might be gay. He would scream at me: ‘Don’t be a,’ he would use an F-word that was very derogatory to the gay community. I won’t use it here in court.” (RELATED: Kevin Spacey Charged With Four Counts Of Sexual Assault)
