An absolutely insane video of a man getting into a serious fight with a bear at Mt. Futago, Japan, went viral online in early October.

The video shows the black bear charging the rock climber as she apparently tries to protect her cub, TMZ noted. Podcaster Joe Rogan shared the clip on his social media Tuesday, warning his followers that bears’ lives are “ruthless and brutal,” despite them being “cool, fascinating animals.”

To escape the wild animal, the man screams and punches her for roughly 30 seconds before she eventually bounds off into the lush green wilderness with her cub. The climber saved his own life from the enormous creature while clinging to the side of a cliff that the bear appeared to scale without a second thought.

The climber was trained in mixed martial arts and karate, but conceded that he was the one invading her territory, TMZ reported. (RELATED: ‘Kind Of Brutal’: Marathon Runner Claims He Was Attacked By Coyote)

The female Japanese black bear typically grows from anywhere between 90 to 220 lbs and eats an omnivorous diet of plants and small reptiles, crabs and carrion, according to Bear Conservation. They’re normally nocturnal, but this recent video clearly shows the female out and about during the day. The species prefer to nest in trees during the day, likely in an attempt to avoid humans.
