White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain explained Thursday night why President Joe Biden was not holding rallies in the run-up to the midterm elections.

“Both President Obama — I was here, I’ll share responsibility for it — and President Trump got walloped in the midterms. So I don’t think it should surprise anyone that we’re not using the strategy that failed in 2010 and the strategy that failed in 2018,” Klain told CNN host Anderson Cooper. “Instead, what you’re seeing is the president is traveling the country with Democrat elected officials, with Democratic candidates, like he was in Pennsylvania today with John Fetterman, our candidate for Senate there, and he is talking about the issues that really impact people — infrastructure, costs, choice — a long line of issues that he is talking about.” (RELATED: ‘Voters Aren’t Stupid’: Clinton Pollster Rips Biden’s Political Strategy Ahead Of Midterms)

WATCH:

Republicans have surged in the generic ballot for Congress in a series of polls. One survey by Emerson showed Republicans leading by 5%, a Harvard-Harris survey gave Republicans a 6% lead and Trafalgar showed a 5% Republican lead – while the RealClearPolitics average showed Republicans going from a 0.6% lead on Oct. 13 to a 3.2% lead Friday.

Biden’s job approval numbers are looking down, with only 39% of voters approving of his performance in a poll by Emerson. A Reuters poll showed only 40% of respondents approved of Biden’s job performance and only 39% of respondents to a Monmouth poll approved of Biden.

“I don’t think rallies have proved effective for candidates in the midterms, and so we’re trying something different that we think will be effective,” Klain concluded.
