Chicago’s Bloody Weekend Ends With More Than 50 Shot, 11 Murdered

More than 50 people were shot over the weekend in Chicago, including a 14-year-old boy on a playground, while three others were killed during a drag racing incident.

The city recorded 43 shooting incidents and tallied 51 shooting victims between 6 p.m. Friday and midnight Sunday, Fox News reported. Of those murdered, 10 were shot and one fatally stabbed, the outlet cited police.

A street racing incident on the 4300 block of South Kedzie saw nearly 100 cars overtake the intersection. After at least 13 rounds were fired, three men were dead according to police. Police said those killed in Sunday’s street race were between ages 15 and 20, all with gang affiliations, Fox News said. (RELATED: The Bears Can’t Even Be Bribed To Stay In Crime-Ridden Chicago)

Several juveniles were among those shot over the weekend, according to Fox News. A 14-year-old boy on a playground was grazed in the face with a bullet Saturday night, the outlet reported. Just an hour after, a 16-year-old male was shot in the back and later died in hospital. Another minor, a 13-year-old girl suffered gunshot wounds to the neck.

Police recorded 26 shooting incidents and nine murders the weekend before, according to Fox News.

Despite boasting some of the strictest gun laws in the country, Chicago remains one of the deadliest for murders, according to data compiled by Crimelytics’ Jeff Asher. The number of murders for the first half of 2022 showed a murder rate of 11.3 for every 100,000. Homicides in the Windy City hit a 25-year high in 2021 with 797 homicides to close out the year, according to NBC 5.
