A group of House Republicans, led by Georgia Rep. Jody Hice, sent a letter to President Joe Biden on Tuesday requesting that he call for the resignation of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Chris Magnus.

In the letter, first obtained by the Daily Caller, the Hice and 15 GOP lawmakers mention a report from Politico in which five current Biden administration officials who work with Magnus told the outlet that he is unengaged in his job. The sources also told Politico that Magnus does not attend White House meetings about the border crisis, talks disparagingly about other agencies to other CBP officials and has not built relationships with CBP or other agencies.

The lawmakers said that, in light of the report, Magnus should be forced to resign and that the next CBP commissioner must be willing to focus on the border crisis.

“Based on a recent report by Politico, U.S. CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus has been sleeping on the job – literally. It is unacceptable for someone in such a critical position to skip high-level meetings because of his sleep schedule. America’s top border official is prioritizing naps over national security. Magnus has been snoring through the skyrocketing border crossings since he got the job. Under his supervision, we’ve seen record-breaking border crossings month after month,” Hice said in a statement before sending the letter. “My colleagues and I demand President Biden act swiftly to ensure that the border crisis is overseen by an engaged official who demonstrates competent leadership to address such a complicated issue. U.S. CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus needs to resign. Our nation’s top border official must be focused on ending the border crisis, not naptime,” Hice added. Border agents encountered a record two million migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2021. In fiscal year 2021, they seized $3.31 billion in counterfeit goods, over 319,000 pounds of marijuana, over 190,000 pounds of methamphetamine and over 97,000 pounds of cocaine.

CBP and the White House did not immediately respond to the Caller’s inquiries about the letter.
