The legal team representing famous R&B singer Trey Songz successfully challenged a civil suit for an alleged rape dating back to 2016, citing that the statute of limitations ran out.
A woman, who filed anonymously under the name “Jane Doe,” claimed that she was involved in a consensual relationship with Songz before the dynamics of their relationship reportedly changed, according to TMZ. Doe alleged that Songz turned into a “savage rapist” on March 24, 2016 during a house party they attended in Los Angeles, according to the Daily Mail.
She waited six years to file charges against him, according to TMZ. The laws surrounding the statute of limitations changed during that timeframe.

Doe brought charges against the singer after accusing him of overpowering her and anally raping her, according to the Daily Mail. The Daily Mail noted that documents filed in court revealed that Doe claims she begged Songz to stop but he did not comply. Songz’s legal team argued that her legal window to file charges against the artist had long expired by the time she decided to come forward, according to the outlet. Doe was seeking $20 million in her lawsuit, according to TMZ.
The statute of limitations in California is currently 10 years but prior to 2019, the statute was three years. Due to the fact that the alleged crime took place in 2016, Doe would have had to have filed charges against Songz by 2019, according to TMZ.
All charges related to this incident have now officially been dropped by the court, according to TMZ.
