Reality television star Maura Higgins from “Love Island UK” revealed in a story published Wednesday that she became seriously ill after she accidentally left a tampon in for three months.

The 31-year-old star shared her tale with ITV’s “Shopping With Keigh Lemon,” telling fans that she became incredibly ill and later discovered she was suffering from Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), which could have led to death, according to The New York Post. Higgins said she fell ill and had no idea what was causing her to feel so sick for quite some time.

“When the doctor found it, it was stuck to my cervix,” Higgins said, in reference to the tampon. “I was so ill,” she said, according to The New York Post.

“I’m not a doctor, I don’t know much about that [TSS], but I know you are not meant to leave a tampon inside for more than, I think it’s nine hours. I think that’s the max,” Higgins said, according to The New York Post. “There was a tampon inside me for three months.” (RELATED: Dr. Dre Reveals He Nearly Died After Suffering Brain Aneurysm)

The “Love Island” star also spoke about how easily this could happen to anyone, especially young girls who may forget or not notice that they haven’t removed their tampons, or those who are unaware of the toxic shock syndrome and how it can affect their bodies.

“Young girls might not have noticed,” she said. “Like you go on a night out, what if you get really drunk and forgot. These things actually do happen and people don’t speak about it.”
