An Indiana homeowner was shot and killed Wednesday night after exchanging gunfire with two people who broke in, according to police.

The Owen County Sheriff’s Department received a call just before 8:15 p.m., on Wednesday about an active home invasion, according to the Indiana State Police Bloomington District. Police say the homeowners confronted the two suspects and exchanged gunfire before the suspects fled.

“There was an exchange of gunfire between the homeowners and a suspect and maybe a second suspect,” Sgt. Michael Wood said, according to Fox59. “That’s really all we have at this time. I don’t want to speculate if it was a home invasion or a targeted event. It really could be anything.”

Upon arrival, officers found 39-year-old Gilardo Garcia Salinas “injured outside of the residence.” Authorities unsuccessfully provided first aid to Salinas, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. Police say the unidentified suspects are believed to have fled the scene in a gray or blue vehicle, of an unknown model. Authorities are searching surveillance videos for more information but say they do not believe the public is in danger.

“Our investigators have disclosed they don’t think the public is in danger, but it’s too early to say if this was a true home invasion, a targeted act or a random event,” Wood reportedly said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
