A man wearing a hospital gown was fatally hit by a car as he tried to cross a Brooklyn highway early on Friday morning, according to local police cited by the New York Post.

The 58-year-old man, according to police, was still dressed in his Coney Island Hospital gown and admitting bracelets when he found his way to the westbound part of the Belt Parkway close to Coney Island Avenue and the Brooklyn hospital at around 5:50 a.m, the New York Post reported. A Honda Accord sedan hit the man as he attempted to run across the highway.

The man died at the scene of the incident. The driver of the Accord remained on location and did not receive any charges, according to the New York Post. (RELATED: Chris Wallace Presses NYC Mayor On ‘Toning…Down’ His Nightlife Amid Migrant Crisis)

Authorities did not release the man’s identity. The circumstances under which he left the hospital remain unclear, the New York Post reported.

New York City has faced a recent uptick in crime. A woman was raped on a Thursday morning jog in the city while the NYPD arrested a man after an armed hijacking of a city bus in late October. Relatives of crime victims have criticized Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul over her refusal to overhaul bail reform.
