A 24-year-old Brooklyn man was charged Monday for stabbing his girlfriend, dismembering her and stuffing her body in a suitcase, where it decomposed for a month.

Justin Williams, 24, stands accused of stabbing D’Asia Johnson, 22, a total of nine times after she got home from work on Aug. 21, stabbing her five times in her chest and four in her back, according to the the New York Daily News. Prosecutors allege that Williams then chopped up Johnson’s body and stored it in a suitcase in her apartment until Sept. 21, using cleaning products and towels to hide the smell of her decomposition while he lived there.

Williams was indicted on Monday on charges related to murder and concealment of a corpse, the Daily News continued. He allegedly admitted during a nearly two-hour interview with police on Oct. 1 that he stabbed Johnson and cut up her body.

“This defendant is accused of the horrific murder and dismemberment of his former girlfriend,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzales said Monday, the outlet noted. “I hope that this prosecution brings some measure of solace to D’Asia’s family and friends.”

Neighbors previously told the outlet that Williams was deeply physical abusive and that Johnson suffered months of horrific beatings that left her with broken bones. Her remains were discovered in two different suitcases in a bathroom that was still covered in her blood, next to a meat cleaver, according to Eyewitness News. Williams was initially arrested for an unrelated assault, grand larceny and jumping bail in Nassau Country and was in jail when he became a person of interest in Johnson’s murder, the Daily News continued. His other girlfriend, Tatiana Hackett, had reportedly been using Johnson’s benefits card since her death. She is not a suspect in Johnson’s death.
