Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer secured reelection early Wednesday, according to multiple election forecasters.
The Michigan Democrat defeated Republican candidate Tudor Dixon on Tuesday. Whitmer won the race with 53.3% of the vote with 85% of the vote reporting, according to The Associated Press. (RELATED: Juror In Whitmer Kidnapping Trial Wanted Defendants To ‘Hang’, Was ‘Far-Left’, Defense Says)
In August, Whitmer was ahead of Dixon by 15 points based on polling by RealClearPolitics, but on Oct. 24 Dixon was within one percentage point of Whitmer based on polling data by the Trafalgar Group. Michigan was leaning toward Whitmer on Monday, according to the Cook Political Report.
Abortion has been a topic of focus for the two candidates ahead of the election, with Whitmer backing Ballot Proposition 3, a measure that would expand abortion rights. Dixon criticized the measure in an Oct. 25 debate, calling it the “most radical law in the entire country.”
“I will keep fighting like hell to make sure Michigan women are protected,” Whitmer wrote in an Oct. 23 tweet.

Dixon, a former radio personality, received endorsements from former President Donald Trump, former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii. Throughout the race, Dixon focused her campaign on education in Michigan, stating that school curriculums have been infiltrated with sexually explicit content.
“There is sexual content and pornography in schools,” Dixon said in the Oct. 25 debate. “Textbooks are now literally describing how to have sex.”
Ahead of the election, Whitmer said she would serve the full four-year term if reelected rather than making a run for the White House in 2024, according to the Detroit News.
“I am running for four more years as governor, and that’s exactly what I want to do,” Whitmer told Detroit News.
