Massachusetts voters on Tuesday approved a ballot measure that permits illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses, WBUR reported.

The Massachusetts measure upholds the Work and Family Mobility Act, which the state legislature passed over outgoing Republican Gov. Charlie Baker’s veto in June. The policy will go into effect next summer, WBUR noted.
Democratic Rhode Island Gov. Daniel McKee signed a similar bill into law at the end of July of this year, according to an official press release.

“This is an important issue for our economy, equality, and public safety,” McKee stated.

Advocates of the bill boasted that the law would create safer roads by exposing even the undocumented into driver’s education and by enrolling the demographic into insurance policies, according to the outlet.
Other states that allow undocumented immigrants to gain state-recognized driving privileges include California, Washington, Oregon, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Hawaii and Virginia, according to the National Conference of State Legislators.
