A new study conducted ahead of Veteran’s Day on November 11 found that California is the worst state U.S. state for military veterans.

The research, conducted by LawnStarter, compared 200 of America’s largest cities on their ability to serve veterans, using metrics such as VA facilities, PTSD recovery programs, housing affordability and employment and educational opportunities. The study used 37 different metrics and found that Providence, Rhode Island, was the best city for veterans.

The methodology also found that California is home to all 10 of the top 10 worst cities for veterans. Only one non-Californian city ranked in the bottom 19, and out of the bottom 40, only five were outside California.

San Diego was the only city that landed on the better half of the list. The study found that California was home to roughly one third of the entire homeless veteran population in the entire country and lacked access to mental health care, employment, education and other major resources, while also being largely unaffordable to live in. When asked what his office planned to do to address the findings from the study, Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom and his office declined to comment.
