Republican Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears said Thursday on Fox Business that former President Donald Trump needs to step aside, adding that she could not support him if he runs again.
Sears was on “Cavuto: Coast to Coast” on Thursday discussing whether Trump needs to step aside.
“Voters have spoken, and they have said that they want a different leader. And a true leader understands when they have become a liability,” Sears said. “A true leader understands that it’s time to step off the stage, and the voters have given us that very clear message. Because this is about America.”
“So does that imply within the Republican Party, lieutenant governor, to Donald Trump that it’s time to step off the stage?”
“Yes, a house divided against itself cannot stand. And indeed that’s where we are today,” Sears said.
“So if the party wants to move on or some in the party such as yourself, Lt. Governor, maybe Gov. Youngkin feels the same way, but Donald Trump still makes a speech next week that he wants to run for president, what would you think about that?” Cavuto asked. “I could not support him. I just couldn’t, because we have seen, for example, in those states where he has endorsed the candidates in fact, Republicans on the same ticket who he did not endorse, over performed whereas his candidates totally underperformed by as much as 10 points. We have a clear mission, and it is time to move on.”
Candidates that Trump endorsed have lost or are trailing in swing districts. The former president endorsed more than 400 candidates throughout the midterm cycle, making his presence known in battleground states like Georgia, Arizona and Pennsylvania. Despite the high-profile endorsements, Pennsylvania elected a Democratic governor and senator while Arizona remains to be called, though both Trump-backed candidates trail their Democratic counterparts. Georgia’s senate race will head to a run off while incumbent Republican Gov. Brian Kemp won his race.

The “Morning Joe” panel agreed Wednesday morning that Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who won his reelection in a landslide, was the new face of the GOP, replacing Trump.
