Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas instructed Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Chris Magnus to resign or face firing directly from President Joe Biden, Magnus told the Los Angeles Times.

Magnus has long faced scrutiny from Republican lawmakers, who demanded his resignation in November following complaints from colleagues about his job performance, including that he fell asleep during meetings, as previously reported by Politico. He said Friday he’s refusing to back down from his post, according to the LA Times. (RELATED: Biden’s DHS Secretary Was Told That Border Patrol ‘Whipping’ Story Didn’t Add Up, Emails Show)

“I am excited about the progress I made and look forward continuing that work,” Magnus said.

Magnus has overseen a record surge in illegal migration at the southern border, with roughly 2.3 million migrants encountered by CBP in fiscal year 2022.

“Based on a recent report by Politico, U.S. CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus has been sleeping on the job – literally. It is unacceptable for someone in such a critical position to skip high-level meetings because of his sleep schedule. America’s top border official is prioritizing naps over national security. Magnus has been snoring through the skyrocketing border crossings since he got the job. Under his supervision, we’ve seen record-breaking border crossings month after month,” Republican Georgia Rep. Jody Hice told the Daily Caller at the time.

The White House, CBP and DHS didn’t immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s requests for comment.
