Former President Donald Trump is up double digits over Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, according to a new GOP primary poll released Tuesday.

The POLITICO/Morning Consult poll shows Trump at 47% support among Republicans and Republican-leaning Independents, compared to 33% for DeSantis. In third place is former Vice President Mike Pence with 5% overall support, according to the poll.

Sixty-five percent of survey respondents said Trump should probably or definitely not run for president again. DeSantis was at 26% support in early November, according to a pre-election GOP primary poll published by Morning Consult, with Trump at 48% support in the same poll.

Trump is expected to announce his 2024 presidential campaign in a primetime event Tuesday at Mar-a-Lago, CBS reported. He teased the announcement at a rally in Iowa ahead of the midterm elections. Aides have pushed for Trump to delay his 2024 announcement until after the Georgia senate runoff election, according to the Washington Post.

Trump has received a wave of scrutiny for how his preferred GOP candidates performed in the tight midterm elections. Republicans were expected to reclaim the Senate and obtain a much larger House majority than current projections estimate. Trump is privately unfazed by the criticism and is eagerly awaiting a rematch with President Joe Biden, according to POLITICO.

DeSantis has emerged as the preferred alternative to Trump among many conservatives disappointed with the midterm results. Multiple state level polls released after election day show DeSantis leading Trump among likely GOP primary voters. DeSantis has received more support from wealthy, higher-educated conservatives living in suburban areas, according to data from Morning Consult.
