Christmas has come early for fans of “The Princess Diaries,” as a third installment of the franchise is in development.

Aadrita Mukerji is writing up the third script of the iconic film franchise that launched Anne Hathaway’s career into the stratosphere, according to a Hollywood Reporter report published Tuesday. Thankfully, this won’t be a reboot or redesign of the original story, as sources have said the script follows on from the original series of films.

The original film was based on a novel by Meg Cabot and earned $165.3 million globally in 2001, THR continued. The second installment of the franchise was released in 2004, bringing in $134.7 million, suggesting that it’s a big money-maker for the entertainment industry. It is one of the few reboots I certainly want to see as soon as humanly possible.

There is no explicit deal for Hathaway to reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis, the film’s leading character whose life is turned upside down when she discovers she’s the heir to the throne of a tiny fictional European country called Genovia. But she has expressed a lot of interest, THR noted. Her co-stars from one or both films — like Julie Andrews, Chris Pine, Mandy Moore, and other big names — also haven’t signed on to take part yet.

The original producer of both films, Debra Martin Chase, is producing the new film, according to THR. (RELATED: Can You Make Out What The ‘White Noise’ Movie Trailer Is About?)

Hathaway has said that getting Julie Andrews involved is a surefire way to make a third installment work, according to Variety. Watch the original trailer here:
