MSNBC political contributor Matthew Dowd gushed over Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi on Thursday after she announced she would step down as Democratic leader.

Pelosi announced she would not seek reelection as Democratic House leader but will remain a member of Congress.

Dowd said Pelosi has been the most “effective” speaker and has been a true “servant” of the people. (RELATED: Suspect In Paul Pelosi Attack Pleads Not Guilty To Federal Charges)

“She’s the most consequential, effective speaker in my lifetime. She should be on everybody’s GOAT list of leaders of the house, of the entirety of our country’s history, she has to be considered one of the greatest of all time,” Dowd said.

“I think what I laud most about her and have always respected about her, even having been on the opposite side of her at times, is she’s our true servant leader. And in all of its manifestations. She served not for her own benefit but for the benefit of others and this step she made today, I think, it is one of the most classy examples of servant leadership, where you step back, you hold power, and you step back to make room at the leadership table for others in the course of this.”

Pelosi has held the position since 2019 and previously stated she would only remain in the position for four years.

Pelosi’s announcement comes after Republicans gained control of the House, reaching a narrow majority after a tight midterm election cycle.
