The mother of missing Georgia toddler Quinton Simon was arrested on murder charges Monday after authorities found the boy’s remains in a landfill Friday.

Twenty-two year-old Leilani Simon was arrested and charged with malice murder, concealing the death of another person, false reporting, and making false statements in connection to Simon’s disappearance, the Chatham County Police Department said in a press release.

Leilani reported Simon as missing on Oct. 5. Days later authorities said Leilani was the prime suspect and on Oct. 18 police said they had evidence that led them to believe Simon’s remains were at the landfill, prompting a massive search.

Leilani’s two other children were placed in foster care after Simon’s disappearance, Fox News reported.

Simon’s babysitter, Diana McCarta, told WSAV she had received an odd message the day Simon went missing. McCarta was slated to watch Simon and his brother but she “got a text this morning saying they would not be here — would not be babysitting them at 5:29 a.m., which was kind of odd because I have them even when she doesn’t work.”

McCarta said hours later she received another message asking if she had seen Simon.

“I immediately go to their house,” McCarta reportedly said. “I try to help them look, they didn’t want that.”
