Joy Reid told her audience during a Thanksgiving-eve episode of “The Reid Out” that the United States of America is a nation “founded on violence.”
While millions of families across the country celebrate the “cherished traditions” of the American holiday with food, family and quite possibly arguing about politics, the origin story of Thanksgiving is tainted, Reid suggested.

The MSNBC host began the segment by acknowledging the traditions of the holiday, noting that it is “the day we gather with friends and family to enjoy turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. “For millions of Americans, it’s a day of cherished traditions. And as Americans, we certainly value those traditions,” Reid continued. “But its also important to unpack the myth of Thanksgiving. It is a holiday riddled with historical inaccuracies.”
Reid went on to state that the origin story of Thanksgiving is “built on this myth that the indigenous welcomed their colonizers with open arms and ears of corn. The historical truth behind the events that led up to the establishment of the early Thanksgiving traditions are stories that Reid says Republicans want “banned” from textbooks.
“Because here is the secret they want so desperately to keep. We are a country founded on violence,” she concluded.
