Police arrested a North Carolina man with a lengthy criminal history Monday in connection with a rape and sexual assault committed more than four decades ago in Maryland, authorities announced.

Durham, North Carolina’s Marion Pearson Jr., 65, has been charged first-degree rape, false imprisonment, robbery and assault for allegedly raping a woman in April 1981, and attempted first-degree rape, false imprisonment and assault for allegedly sexually assaulting a different woman that June in Silver Spring, Maryland, according to a Montgomery County Police Department press release. DNA evidence from the first incident was matched with Pearson this year after Montgomery County cold case detectives and forensic specialists submitted it to the Combined DNA Index System, and the second incident had a similar suspect description and pattern, according to police.

Pearson was released from North Carolina prison in 2020 after serving 22 years for multiple first-degree rapes, the press release said. He previously lived in Maryland’s Prince George’s County and was arrested several times between 1980 and 1999 for assault, indecent exposure and peeping-tom.
