Police in Medina County, Texas, are investigating an animal cruelty case after a family dog was found with an arrow shot through his head Sunday afternoon, the family told KENS5.

After hearing her dog Lola barking frantically, Stacee Gomez looked out the window to see her father’s dog, Boomer, standing on the front porch with an arrow shot through his head, according to KENS5.

“I panicked and screamed. Then my dad just kind of came running and I just told him, ‘Dad he has an arrow in his head!'” Stacee told the outlet.

The Gomez family brought Boomer to the veterinarian’s office, where the vet told them they were lucky the dog was still alive. The arrow went into Boomer’s head and ricocheted off his skull, fracturing his orbital bone and nasal cavity before piercing straight through to the other side, KENS 5 reported. Ben received Boomer as a Christmas gift from his children, and the two have been inseparable ever since, according to a GoFundMe page Stacee set up to help pay for Boomer’s medical bills.

The investigation into who shot Boomer and why is ongoing, according to KENS5.
