A North Carolina school board held a presentation detailing the district’s transgender policy stating that the school has no obligation to report a student’s change in gender identity to their parents, according to a presentation made public by Parents Defending Education.

The presentation at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District Board of Education meeting on Aug. 17 detailed the district policy which explains that a student can request a name or pronoun change at school without parental consent, according to the presentation. The policy expands stating that if a student’s parent is “disapproving” of the gender transition the school should work with the student to decide if and when a parent should be involved in the process. “There is never a justification for a policy that calls for the deliberate withholding and concealment of information from parents about their own child,” Erika Sanzi, director of outreach for Parents Defending Education, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “This policy is based on an ideology; it has no place in schools.”

Educators should use a student’s legal name and pronouns when talking with a parent unless instructed by the student or parent to use a different name, the policy stated. Students are permitted to use bathrooms and locker rooms on the basis of gender identity under the policy.

On overnight trips, transgender students should be in the situation that makes them the most comfortable and permission should be given before revealing a student’s gender identity to other students and educators, the policy stated. Educators are also asked to consider on field trips if any “sex segregation” is necessary.

Schools across the country are implementing transgender policies to keep gender transitions hidden from parents; a Minnesota middle school teacher used a back-to-school survey to ask students if there is a different name they would like to go by and keep hidden from their parents. A Pennsylvania middle school implemented a policy that tells educators the student has a “right” to keep their “gender identity private at school.”

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District Board of Education did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
