Another unreal game from the World Cup, and it came with several different forms of fireworks.

Argentina and the Netherlands played each other in a 2022 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals contest to see who would punch their tickets to the semi-finals. An intense match led to a penalty shootout, with the Argentinians pulling out the 2-2 (4-3 PK) win after originally blowing a 2-0 lead.

Lionel Messi got things started off for Argentina after landing an assist following a goal from Nahuel Molina, and then in the 73rd minute of the game, Messi — who suits up for Paris Saint-Germain in club play, next year for Inter Miami CF — hit a penalty kick to give Argentina the 2-0 advantage.

Wout Weghorst scored both of the Netherlands’ goals, with his first goal coming in the 82nd minute, followed by the tying 2-2 goal at the 100-minute mark.

After the goals, neither team could find anything else, sending us into extra-time where the game ended in a scoreless draw. As a result, the teams entered into a penalty shootout, with Argentina pulling out the 4-3 victory in a nailbiter.

But those weren’t the only fireworks of the game, with the two sides nearly getting into a full-out brawl:

What an absolutely insane game.

These are the kinds of matches where I wonder how people (Americans in particular) aren’t into soccer.

In that game we had high-powered offense, physical defense, and we nearly had an all-out brawl. Not to mention the last-minute chaos and the clutch genes on full display from both sides. And we also had star power such as Lionel Messi and Virgil Van Dijk on full display. What a fantastic game, truly incredible. I look forward to England-France and Portugal-Morocco Dec. 10. I hope you guys will join me.

And go Argentina!
