A Nantucket high school student lost his life after colliding with a cement truck while operating a motorcycle Thursday.

The Massachusetts teen was pronounced dead at the scene after authorities arrived to the crash site, the Nantucket Current reported. The collision occurred while the operator of the cement truck was allegedly attempting to take a left turn, a witness told the outlet.

Classmates of the high school student banded together to create a memorial as close to the scene of the crash as authorities allowed them to, the outlet noted. Flowers and a Nantucket hat made up a make-shift memorial scene following the tragedy.

All Friday classes were cancelled at Nantucket High. Instead, the school offered counseling services to anyone in mourning on the island. “We are closing school in order to provide services for those who need support,” high school principal Mandy Vasil and assistant principal Jen Psaradelis wrote in an email to parents, according to the Current.

The late teenager was reportedly also on the Nantucket High football team. Teammates planned a Friday vigil at the school that took place at noon, Vasil told the outlet. (RELATED:Utah Man Allegedly Steals Excavator, Digs Up Grocery Store Parking Lot)
