Maryland police executed a search warrant for the apartment of a man suspected in the shooting death of a gas station clerk and discovered the decomposing body of a pregnant woman.

Thirty-one-year-old Torrey Moore was arrested and charged in early December with first degree murder and possession of a firearm while committing a felony, according to TooFab. Those charges were in relation to the murder of 61-year-old convenience store employee Ayalew Wondimu, who was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting, according to TooFab.

Police said they located the body of a pregnant woman in “advanced stage of decomposition” during their search of Moore’s apartment.

Police Chief Marcus Jones of the Montgomery County Police Department, said that after a brief altercation with Wondimu, Moore pulled a handgun from his pocket and shot Wondimu “at point blank range,” according to TooFab. Police tracked Moore to an apartment building across the street from the scene of the crime, where he was taken into custody without incident.

Moore reportedly “gave statements to detectives that he had been in a relationship with the person located inside the apartment” and went on to indicate that “the victim was eight months pregnant at the time of her death,” Jones said, according to TooFab. Police indicated that Moore waived his Miranda rights in the Wondimu case and admitted that “there had been some type of fight” between him and the deceased pregnant woman “about one month prior that led to the victim becoming deceased,” according to TooFab. Authorities are performing an autopsy on the woman in order to determine her identity and notify next of kin. Further charges against Moore remain pending at this time.

“We’re at the very early stages of this investigation, and trying to understand her family history … what has been occurring between these two individuals over the past — during the course of their relationship, and what would have occurred that would have warranted someone’s dead body to be in the apartment for a very lengthy period of time and not contact authorities,” Jones said.

“That raises a lot of concerns for us. So we’ve got a lot of work to do, to follow up with this particular investigation,” Jones said, according to TooFab.

Moore is scheduled to appear in court Monday for a bond hearing and has a preliminary hearing set for Jan. 6, 2023, according to WJLA.
