Kennedy Center President Deborah Rutter declared Sandler the winner, and went on to describe the many qualities that led to Sandler’s win.

“Adam Sandler has entertained audiences for over three decades with his films, music and his tenure as a fan favorite cast member on [‘Saturday Night Live’],” Rutter said, according to The Hill. “Adam has created characters that have made us laugh, cry and cry from laughing.” (RELATED: NBA Announces MVP Trophy Will Be Redesigned After Legend Michael Jordan)

The award “recognizes individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain,” Rutter said, according to The Hill.

Sandler has yet to comment publicly about being honored with the award.
