The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is shutting down its pediatric gender program following pressure from state Republicans, the institution told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
Controversy over the program erupted in September when an unearthed report showed that MUSC’s pediatric endocrinology unit was offering transgender care to patients aged 4-18 and that half of the patients went on cross-sex hormones and 20% went on puberty blockers. South Carolina Republicans had already been pushing for months to crack down on childhood medical transitions at MUSC, Republican State Rep. Robert May told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
“The South Carolina Freedom Caucus has long suspected that the Medical University of South Carolina had been engaging in the sexualization of children for the woke, radical agenda,” May told the DCNF. “This is a temporary budget proviso, but the South Carolina Freedom Caucus filed legislation this year that would codify that into permanent law to prevent anybody under 18 from undergoing medical gender transitions. This is a big win for the South Carolina Freedom Caucus but it’s a bigger win for childhood innocence.”
Legislators barred the hospital from using state funding to perform gender transitions on minors under 16 through a July budget amendment Republicans had pushed for, according to May. MUSC has since agreed to comply with that rule and announced it will no longer offer hormonal interventions for minors as part of gender transitions, a spokesman told the DCNF.
“Mutilating children—and it’s happening in SC. The Legislature must act to protect our kids,” Republican State Representative Adam Morgan wrote in response to the unearthed report. (RELATED: US Out Of Step With World On Transgender Treatments For Kids, Medical Org Quietly Acknowledges)

“The reason we stopped offering pediatric/adolescent transgender hormonal care is because state law changed in July,” he said, adding that gender services were still available for adults. The legislation, however, only banned the services for children under 16, but MUSC has shut down the services for all minors.
The MUSC report on its child gender transition program that sparked the debate in South Carolina was not an official statement from MUSC, and the institution denied accusations that it was providing blockers or hormones to children before puberty as part of the gender transition process, according to Live 5.
“This is not appropriate medical practice in pediatric endocrinology,” hospital officials said, according to WSAV. “Children presenting with gender dysphoria and children with related psychological and behavioral issues do not receive hormone therapies before puberty.”
