President Joe Biden is set to visit El Paso, Texas, in the coming days as the city struggles to deal with the recent influx in illegal immigrants that have paralyzed key municipal functions.

Biden will potentially arrive as soon as Sunday, and Secret Service is already scouting the area, people familiar with the matter told the Daily Caller News Foundation. Axios reported Thursday that Biden plans to visit the El Paso area before later heading to Mexico for the North American Leaders’ Summit.

El Paso officials previously requested the Biden administration allow them access to military bases to house migrants as Customs and Border Protection (CBP) saw roughly 2,500 migrants cross into the city each day. Many migrants have been forced to sleep on the streets as the city lacks the capacity to adequately shelter them.

Biden made the announcement Wednesday that he would be visiting the border following criticism of his handling of the recent surge in illegal immigration, as well as his refusal to previously visit the border in his first two years in office. Former city councilwoman Claudia Rodriguez, who has been calling on the president to visit the border, told the DCNF she was informed Biden will come to the area on Sunday.

Secret Service has had a new presence in the area, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official, who requested anonymity as they were not authorized to speak publicly, told the DCNF.

A record of more than 2.3 million migrants have crossed the southern border in fiscal year 2022, according to CBP. The surge has greatly affected El Paso, Texas, in recent weeks, leading Border Patrol to release illegal immigrants en masse onto city streets.

Democratic El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser recently declared an emergency to deploy additional resources to the area and to open a city shelter for illegal migrants sleeping on the streets.

The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
