A speaker at a panel of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, said Tuesday that the world did not need “growth or development” to address climate change.

“I feel that — we were talking about work development, I think indeed we don’t need, like, growth or development,” Nicole Keller, managing director of GreenUp, a Swiss non-governmental organization that promotes a “resource-light” lifestyle. “I really think less is more.” (RELATED: US Will ‘Soon’ Have ‘Illegal Hate Speech’ Laws, World Economic Forum Panelist Tells Brian Stelter)

The discussion on “Protecting the Climate Vulnerable” took place on the second day of the WEF, which continues through Friday. Other panelists included Helen Gualinga of the Indigenous Youth Collective of Amazon Defenders, Jade Hameister of the Villars Institute, Alan Dangour of the Wellcome Trust and Omid Nouripour of Alliance 90/The Greens.

The panel was promoted as a way for “the voices of our global youths” to tell world leaders how they could “promote justice and provide support to communities most affected by the climate crisis.”

Keller’s comments come one day after Bastien Girod of the Swiss National Council, the lower chamber of the Swiss legislature, touted the idea of cities where people could live a “sustainable lifestyle in harmony with nature the easiest way to go.”

Girod also praised President Joe Biden for proposing that the federal government only do business with companies that sought to meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

“The end is, we have to save this planet to save our freedom and the way we are living,” Nouripour said. “And we are not good enough yet. We have to improve.”
