President Biden appeared to go off script during his State of the Union address Tuesday evening, saying that the U.S. would need oil and natural gas for many years to come.
“We are still going to need oil and gas for a while,” Biden said during his speech.
Biden’s comments were quickly met with a mixed reaction as some Republicans appeared to cheer the remarks.
The president then told an anecdote in which an oil executive asked him why his company should invest in fossil fuel projects in light of the negative business atmosphere for oil and gas projects. Biden said he responded that oil and gas would be needed for years to come.
“They said, ‘well, we’re afraid you’re going to shut down all the oil wells and all the oil refineries. So, why should we invest in them?’ I said, ‘we’re going to need oil for at least another decade and beyond,'” Biden added.

President Biden made several bipartisan overtures in his second State of the Union address Tuesday night, but if he had hopes to unite Congress and the country behind his agenda, those hopes appear dashed as many Republicans say he was “lying shamelessly” and stoking divisions.
GOP lawmakers are furious with the president, who accused them of wanting to hold the economy “hostage” and sunset Social Security and Medicare. Biden’s statements were met with raucous boos in the House chamber, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., was seen shouting “Liar!” at the president. The reaction to Biden’s claim in the House chamber was so strong the president actually walked back his comments.
“I’m not saying it’s a majority of you. I don’t even think it’s even a significant – but it’s being proposed by individuals,” Biden said. “I’m politely not naming them, but it’s being proposed by some of you.”
Faced with continued boos, Biden acknowledged that Congress was in agreement to leave Social Security and Medicare untouched.

President Joe Biden went off-script during Tuesday night’s State of the Union address to call out Chinese President Xi Jinping.
During a section of remarks on the decline of autocracies and strength of democracies across the world, Biden began yelling that there are no world leaders who would want to trade places with Xi. The comments were not included in a transcript of Biden’s speech released earlier in the evening by the White House.
“Autocracy has grown weaker not stronger. Name me a world leader who would change places with Xi Jinping,” Biden shouted. “Name me one! Name me one!”

Republican members of Congress lashed out at President Biden during his State of the Union address Tuesday night after he commented on the case of a 20-year-old girl killed by a fentanyl overdose.
“It’s your fault!” one Congress member could be heard yelling from the GOP side of the aisle after the 80-year-old president noted that thousands of Americans are being killed every year by the deadly drug — which many blame his administration for letting slip through the southern border.

President Biden on Tuesday doubled down on his calls for a ban on assault weapons as he pleaded with Congress to “do something” in the face of gun violence.
During his State of the Union address, Mr. Biden recognized Brandon Tsay, the California man credited for preventing the gunman responsible for the mass shooting at a Lunar New year celebration earlier this year from carrying out further attacks. The president urged lawmakers to do their part to help save lives by passing new gun restrictions.
“Two weeks ago, during Lunar New Year celebrations, he heard the studio’s front door close and saw a man pointing a gun at him,” Mr. Biden said. “In that instant, he found the courage to act and wrestled the semi-automatic pistol away from a gunman who had already killed 11 people at another dance studio.”
“He saved lives,” he said. “It’s time we do the same as well. Ban assault weapons now.”
