Republican Rep. Gary Palmer of Alabama joked about the Green New Deal after lights went out during a Wednesday hearing of the House Oversight Committee.
“Did Twitter do that?” an unidentified man asked after the lights went out while Palmer was questioning former Twitter executives regarding the handling of tweets by the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, forcing the hearing to recess while the electrical issue was addressed. “Sounds like the Green New Deal to me,” Palmer responded after a few seconds, drawing some laughter from people in the room just as emergency lights came on.
Khamenei has a history of posting tweets targeting Israel, including ones that called for “armed resistance,” that prompted questions from then-FCC commissioner Ajit Pai in 2020.
Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York introduced the Green New Deal shortly after winning her first term to the House of Representatives in the 2018 elections following her defeat of then-Rep. Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary. The program reportedly seeks to combat climate change and to “promote justice and equity” among “frontline and vulnerable communities.”
The hearing on Twitter’s censorship on multiple issues, with an Oct 14, 2020 report by the New York Post on the contents of a laptop abandoned by Hunter Biden the primary focus, when the lights went out, according to a Tweet by CSPAN.
