A shooting took place Monday at Michigan State University that left four people dead, including the gunman who fatally shot himself off campus, and five others wounded in a night that featured a manhunt that lasted for hours.

Police announced the death of the gunman early Tuesday, which came four hours after the original shootings happened — with the first breaking out at a university academic building at Berkey Hall, and the next shooting taking place at the nearby MSU Union, an eating and studying hub that is popular with students.

“This truly has been a nightmare we’re living tonight,” stated Chris Rozman, who is the interim deputy chief of Michigan State’s campus police department.

Late in the evening of Feb. 13, MSU Police and Public Safety announced that all campus activities that were scheduled in the next 48 hours, including athletics, are now canceled.

Michigan State’s men’s basketball team was supposed to play a home game Feb. 15 against Minnesota, while the other sporting event that was canceled in the 48-hour window was from the schedule of the men’s tennis team, who planned to be hosting rapper Drake Feb. 15

The school’s women’s basketball team also has a scheduled game Feb. 15, but their game is on the road at Purdue. There has been no update on whether or not the teams will play. (RELATED: Washington Nationals Owner Ted Lerner Dead At 97)

During a second press conference, university police announced again that everything associated with Michigan State will be shut down for 48 hours, while other cancellations could also take place.
