The first reviews are in for “Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania,” and it doesn’t look great for the franchise.

With more than 180 reviews of the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie shared on Rotten Tomatoes, the overall rating came back at just 50%, a damning number for what was a likely expensive flick. Starring Paul Rudd in the title role, “Ant-Man” is anticipated to have cost somewhere around the $200 million mark, meaning it would need to make at least $500 million to become profitable, Screen Rant suggested.

Earning that number could be unlikely for the studio thanks to the current slew of critical reviews. Most of the one-liners provided by critics are pretty comical. Jordan Hoffman of the Times of Israel, a “top-critic” on Rotten Tomatoes wrote, “the movie ends up being confusing (a sin) and dull (a bigger sin.).”

“Ant-Man knows superheroes are a little ridiculous, and that even when you’re rescuing an entire tiny realm, it’s best to keep a sense of proportion,” Noah Berlatsky from Splice Today commented.

The one unanimous finding from critics is high praise for Jonathan Majors as Kang, with some suggesting that he’ll likely have more of a role in future MCU movies. “To introduce Kang, really, is all Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania exists to do. In and of itself, it’s a boring story devoid of meaningful stakes,” Jack King from the U.K.’s GQ argued. An audience score has yet to be issued by Rotten Tomatoes, but more than 250 reviews have been published at the time of writing. Most of the comments also pick up on the epic work done by Majors, and a few noted it was a confusing story but generally seemed to enjoy the escapism.
