Virginia Democrats voted down a bill that would require medical care for infants born alive after a botched abortion in a Senate committee Thursday.

The bill, introduced by state Delegate Nick Freitas, would require medical professionals exercise the same level of care towards an infant born alive after an attempted abortion as they would for any other child. A health care provider who fails to comply with the law would face a Class 4 felony and possible disciplinary action from the Board of Medicine. The bill passed the House 52 to 47 on February 7. (RELATED: ‘Sold Kids Out’: Democrats Vote In Support Of Schools Keeping Gender Transition Secret From Parents)

The bill failed in the Education and Health Committee in the Senate by a vote of 9 to 6. Every Democrat voted against the bill.

“It is egregious that the Senate Democrats in Virginia would refuse medical care to babies who are born. In this case, we’re not even talking about abortion. We’re talking about babies who were attempted to be aborted but lived, and they deserve the same medical care that any other child would be given at that gestational age,” Caitlin Connors, Souther Regional Director at Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, told the Daily Caller. “So it’s baffling to me that we can’t agree that they should be able to receive the same medical care.”

“So while they’re being as extreme as they possibly can — to advocate and push for abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy in the Commonwealth of Virginia — they’re also denying basic medical health care to babies who are born who need medical attention and would be given medical attention if they were born under different circumstances.”
