Famous New York City pizza joint 2 Bros. Pizza is raising the price of its $1 slice because inflation has raised the costs of ingredients and labor.

2 Bros. Pizza’s cheese slices will now cost $1.50 at all of its locations, the New York Post reported. The chain’s shop in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan and its Bronx location will begin the 50% price hike this week. Several other 2 Bros. locations have already adopted the $1.50 price, the owners said. (RELATED: Americans Tighten Their Belts Even More As Inflation And Uncertainty Persist)

“Over the past few years, we had done everything in our power to keep the cheese slices at $1 while refusing to compromise on our quality,” co-owner Eli Halali told the New York Post. “We were no longer able to break even.”

Halali cited dairy costs as a primary driver of the price increase. “The biggest issue in recent months was cheese prices stabilizing at a higher average than where they’ve been for the last decade,” he said. Cheese costs make up over 40% of the company’s food bills, he told the NY Post.

His brother, Oren, co-founder of 2 Bros., said inflation raised costs across the board. “Inflation is affecting every single ingredient, every single item we use. Flour, cheese, tomatoes, gloves, paper goods, paper plates, napkins. Everything. Labor is definitely up, as well,” he told the outlet in 2021.
