Those of us waiting for the second half of “Yellowstone” season five will probably be doing so until at least 2024, according to recent updates.

As we reported in March, it felt obvious “Yellowstone” was unlikely to return in 2023. While co-creator Taylor Sheridan is in development on more than 10 projects with Paramount, tensions between him and “Yellowstone” leading man Kevin Costner have allegedly reached a fever point.

During a panel at PaleyFest LA on Saturday, Paramount’s president of development and production Keith Cox did his best to avoid answering questions on when production would start in the second half of the season, according to People. While Cox was apparently optimistic about Costner’s return, the timeline is still basically unknown.

“What I can say is our star, the face of our show and the executive producer, are very confident he’s going to continue with our show,” Cox told the audience, People reported.

But his fellow cast members are pretty confident Costner’s character and others will end up dead. Josh Lucas, who plays a young Costner on the show, said Sheridan “always planned on at some point, having Kevin die and having multiple characters die.”

“And so you know that that’s just … the evolution of what the ranch is. That’s why when you see the cemetery and you see the names of Elsa and you see the names of Jacob and you see these names, I think it’s of course going to evolve and change,” Lucas continued, according to the outlet. “And I think that’s what hopefully people will really like as it goes.”

The second half of season five was supposed to come out in Summer 2023. But the official  “Yellowstone” YouTube channel recently removed the teaser for the return. Sheridan and Costner were also absent from PaleyFest, as were a majority of the leading cast members, People reported. One bit of good news about “Yellowstone” and Sheridan’s incredibly cinematic universe with Paramount is that superstar Matthew McConaughey is officially on the cards for either his own spin-off or a role in upcoming seasons of the cowboy drama.
