“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin claimed Thursday that the electoral college is about slavery.

The panel were discussing the 2024 presidential field, with co-host Joy Behar saying Democrats are trying “to make things better for Americans in this country.”

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin then said that the “Republican voters are out of step with our elected officials. I don’t think most Republican voters-”

“Yeah, but they’ll vote for a Republican candidate, and you know it,” Behar said.

“Our primary system is set up in such a way that the worst people get nominated,” Griffin said. (RELATED: MSNBC Host Accuses American Founders Of ‘Crimes Against Democracy’)

“The Republican Party hasn’t won a popular vote in several decades. So the way they win, they win through the Electoral College, based on the slave system,” Hostin said. “And the bottom line here is until we really do something about the Electoral College, I think we may have these clowns in office. I mean, these are not serious people.”

The Electoral College was created so that elections were based on geographical balance rather than regional density. At the time of the birth of the nation, no nation worldwide chose its chief executive directly, prompting founders to come up with a solution in which a state would appoint independent “electors” who would then cast votes for the president. There was, however, the “three-fifths compromise” in which three-fifths of each state’s entire population of enslaved black Americans would be included when determining how many electors each state got.
