Republican North Carolina Sen. Ted Budd introduced legislation Wednesday that would require all political appointees and Senior Executive Service employees to disclose balances for all federal student loans.

The legislation, first obtained by the Daily Caller and titled the Federal Employee Student Debt Transparency Act, would also apply to employees who have a direct role in the political and policy functions of the Biden administration.

In 2022, the Daily Caller News Foundation reported that over one dozen Democrats serving in Congress, who have supported student loan cancellation, reported up to roughly $1.5 million combined in their own or one of their family member’s student loan debt. “The Biden administration’s student loan cancellation is an affront to the millions of borrowers who responsibly repaid their loan balances, as well as the millions of taxpayers who don’t have a college degree and would be forced to subsidize the loans of others. The Biden administration clearly overreached its executive authority to cancel student loan debt, and taxpayers deserve to know if the Biden political team has a conflict of interest as to why they were so willing to cross clear legal boundaries to pursue a student loan bailout,” Budd told the Caller before introducing the bill.
