The remains of an Australian fisherman who went missing Saturday were found inside a crocodile on Monday.

The fisherman, Kevin Darmody, 65, was last spotted at a well-known saltwater crocodile habitat in northern Queensland, Kennedy’s Bend, according to the BBC. Police searched the area for two days, and eventually recovered human body parts after euthanizing two large crocodiles in the area.

The two crocodiles, which measured 13.4 feet and 9.1 feet in length, were shot Monday less than a mile from where Darmody was last seen, the BBC continued. Remains were only found inside one of the crocodiles, but wildlife officers believe both creatures were involved in the incident.

Darmody was considered an experienced fisherman, well known in his Cape York community. Those with him at the time of his disappearance did not see the attack. All they heard was him yelling, which was followed by a large splash.

“I raced down… but there was no sign of him, just his thongs [flip-flops] on the bank and nothing else,” one of his friends told the Cape York Weekly. (RELATED: Alligator Drags Man Into Pond, Kills Him)

Authorities have called the situation a “tragic ending” for Darmody.

Attacks by crocodiles are rare, despite their high population throughout the area, the BBC noted. An incident in 2022 led to a man using a frying pan to battle a crocodile that had wandered into the area around his bar. Thankfully, no one was injured, and the frying pan worked to deter the croc from coming back.
