Deceased financier and sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein moved $270,000 between accounts for Noam Chomsky, the prominent left-wing activist and academic confirmed to The Wall Street Journal.

Chomsky met with Epstein several times after he registered as a sex offender in 2010, and Chomsky received the transfer in March 2018, according to the WSJ. It was “restricted to rearrangement of my own funds, and did not involve one penny from Epstein,” Chomsky told the WSJ.

Chomsky, 94, is considered the founder of modern linguistics, according to a biography on his website. He has been a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1955, and has written over 1oo books.

Chomsky clarified that he sought Epstein’s assistance on a technical issue concerning the distribution of shared finances tied to his first marriage, according to the WSJ.

“My late wife died 15 years ago after a long illness. We paid no attention to financial issues,” he wrote in an email to the WSJ. “We asked Epstein for advice. The simplest way seemed to be to transfer funds from one account in my name to another, by way of his office.” He did not hire Epstein and it was a simple and swift fund transfer, he told the WSJ. WSJ reached out to Chomsky about his relationship with Epstein in April and he said, “First response is that it is none of your business. Or anyone’s. Second is that I knew him and we met occasionally.” Chomsky and Epstein met to talk about political and academic subjects, he told the WSJ. Epstein also planned to fly with Chomsky to have dinner with filmmaker Woody Allen, according to the WSJ.

“Epstein had served a sentence, and under standard civilized norms, returns to society without prejudice,” Chomsky told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “He regularly attended research seminars at Harvard.  Some had further contacts with him, my wife and me included.  All perfectly public for many years. No one ever discussed it, because there was nothing to discuss.”
Chomsky added: “My wife and I asked for advice on a personal financial matter. Years later reports appeared with serious accusations about him.  He was very soon apprehended and jailed.  Obviously, no one knew what couldn’t be known.”
