Americans largely disapprove of President Joe Biden’s handling of immigration policy, according to an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll released Monday.
Only 31% of Americans approve on the president’s handling of immigration, according to the poll, which was conducted between May 11-15. Under Biden’s leadership, federal authorities have seen record surges in illegal immigration, recording more than 2.3 million migrant encounters in fiscal year 2022 and more than 1.4 million at the southern border so far in fiscal year 2023. Between October 2022 and March 2023, Border Patrol agents apprehended 98 migrants whose names appeared on the terror watchlist, reaching the total arrests made in all of fiscal year 2023 of suspected terrorists.
The poll was conducted in the days following an influx of roughly 10,000 migrant encounters per day leading up to May 11, when Title 42, the Trump-era expulsion order, ended. To mitigate an expected influx of migrants after the policy ended, the Biden administration announced new legal pathways for entering the country and increased restrictions for those choosing to skirt the law.
Biden admitted May 10 that there’s been “chaos” at the U.S.-Mexico border “for years.”
Only about half of Democrats approve of Biden’s handling of immigration, the poll also found.
The poll’s margin of error was 3.4 percentage points. The poll surveyed 1,680 adults.
