Famous rapper Fetty Wap was sentenced on Wednesday to six years in jail for dealing 25 kilograms of cocaine as part of a bicoastal narcotics ring.

The New York drug case gripped the headlines when the “Trap Queen” rapper — whose real name is Willie Junior Maxwell II — was accused of driving to Long Island six times in the spring of 2020 to purchase cocaine and then selling it on the streets of New York and New Jersey, according to the New York Post. The artist issued an apology for his actions in court.

“I always aimed to lead,” he said, according to the Post. “I ended up hurting the community, hurting the people who look up to me, hurting my family, hurting my children, hurting myself.”

“I only wanted to do right by my family and loved ones,” he told the judge, explaining that he dealt drugs to support his eight children. Fetty Wap’s legal team argued that the star’s income dried up when live events were banned during the pandemic, but his bills and responsibilities continued to pile up, per the Post

“There were a lot of mouths to feed. The financial obligations were swallowing him up,” Fetty Wap’s lawyer, Elizabeth Macedonio said, according to the outlet. “He got in and got out. His family was taken care of and that was the end of it.”

The 31-year-old pleaded guilty in August to one count of conspiracy to possess and distribute more than 500 grams of cocaine, and was facing a minimum of 5 years and maximum of 40 years behind bars, the Post reported.

Federal Judge Joanna Seybert denied his team’s request for the minimum sentence, noting that Fetty Wap had violated his bail conditions by threatening a rival with a gun during a FaceTime call when he wasn’t supposed to possess a weapon in the first place.

“There is a message to be sent,” Seybert said. “Without a doubt, you did a lot of dumb things when you got out, things that are arguably criminal.” (RELATED: Judge Issues Arrest Warrant For Kodak Black After He Tested Positive For Fentanyl)

Fetty Wap and four others allegedly distributed over 100 kilograms of cocaine, heroin, fentanyl and crack cocaine from June 2019 through June 2020, with drugs shipped to Fetty and other dealers via distributors on the west coast, according to the Post.
