Boxer Dmitriy Dvali may lose his eye after he, his brother and their cornerman saved a young man from being beaten by a group of men in Crimea in July.

At least nine people have reportedly been arrested after a brawl erupted in Feodosia, Crimea, in which Russian boxer Dmitriy Dvali, 23, was seriously injured, according to Russian media. Dvali was in the region for a boxing masterclass and was enjoying a morning run with his brother, Yury, and their cornerman when they came upon a group of men savagely beating a youngster, Sports Illustrated reported.

All three men jumped in to protect the man but were violently assaulted themselves. Reports suggest Dvali suffered injuries related to blunt force trauma.

“Dmitry and a coach named tried to protect the teenager, but they themselves suffered significant injuries. Dvali suffered a fracture of the orbital bone, and [cornerman] Yevgeny suffered a fracture of the arm,” local media reported, SI noted. Dvali was knocked unconscious by the attack and continued to be beaten by the group. His nose and eye socket were broken and medical professionals are desperately trying to save his eye.

His brother doesn’t appear to have been injured except for cuts and bruises. Dvali is a World Championship boxing medalist and World Champion among military personnel and Russian youth champion. He is also the 2024 European champion.
