Nine people — including five minors — died after a car overturned in a Florida canal Monday evening, authorities said.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Capt. Tom Reyes said that first responders found the vehicle upside down with only the wheels visible in a canal, according to ABC News. The car went off the roadway and hit a guardrail that caused the vehicle to overturn, PBSO’s accident report says.

Authorities say the driver failed to properly negotiate a left curve but are unsure why he allegedly didn’t do so, ABC News reported.

Only one person managed to survive the deadly crash and was transported to hospital, authorities said. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) announced that a fire rescue team pronounced four victims dead at the scene, while four others died in transit to the hospital.

Police mentioned that the dead included babies, ABC News reported. PBSO’s accident report identified the sole survivor as 26-year-old Jorden Hall.

Police are conducting an ongoing investigation into the crash, ABC News reported.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families during this heartbreaking incident,” PBSO tweeted. (RELATED: 25 People Killed Following Bus Crash In Mountainous Area)
