Netflix released the trailer Tuesday for “American Murder: Laci Peterson” and it is one of the most disturbing things you’ll see this season.

The three-part docuseries will follow the “disturbing disappearance [and] murder of Laci Peterson in 2002,” according to the official description. Peterson was reported missing from her home in California while eight months pregnant with her first child. Her remains were uncovered in the San Francisco Bay, with law enforcement building a case around her killer: her husband, Scott Peterson, according to the full synopsis.

Scott Peterson was convicted of murdering his wife more than 20 years ago but is now facing a new trial, according to Parade. He’s maintained his innocence to this day after pleading not guilty at trial.

Using “news clips, interrogation footage, and courtroom cameras to bring the dramatic disappearance, investigation, and trial into focus,” the series interviews people like “detectives, lawyers, and jurors involved in Peterson’s trial, and also includes a conversation with Amber Frey, the woman with whom Peterson was living a double life at the time of his wife’s disappearance.”

Peterson may be getting a new trial after taking part in his own docuseries with Peacock, Parade noted. This is the first time he’s spoken to the press in more than two decades. (RELATED: Police Say Man Killed Wife, Three Sons In Apparent Murder-Suicide)

It feels like Netflix is responding to the Peacock show by giving a voice to the many, many others whose lives were changed forever by Peterson. The series gives Laci’s mother, Sharon Rocha, an in-depth opportunity to talk about the loss of her daughter and insight into their lives.

The series drops Aug. 14.
