Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla of California claimed during a Thursday CNN appearance that Vice President Kamala Harris has no need to do interviews due to the three-and-a-half years she’s been on the job and her “unprecedented” replacement of President Joe Biden as the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio approached reporters near Air Force Two on Wednesday in Wisconsin, saying he worried that they “might get lonely” due to Harris not giving interviews, which Padilla described as a “stunt.” He also told “CNN News Central” host Sara Sidner that Harris had a lengthy track record of public service and boasted of the vice president’s “experience” and “maturity.” (RELATED: ‘I Thought You Guys Might Get Lonely’: JD Vance Strides Over To Bored Reporters Waiting For Harris On Tarmac)

“It’s trolling. It’s a stunt. It’s desperation, if you ask me. They can’t run on a record. They can’t run on a vision for the future. They can’t run on hope, optimism for the American people. So this is what they’re left with,” Padilla claimed. “Vice President Harris has not just done interview after interview over the years, she has been doing the job of vice president for more than three-and-a-half years. You know, tremendous chapter in her career after having been a district attorney in San Francisco, after having been attorney general for the state of California, after having served in the United States Senate longer than J.D. Vance has even been in office. So let’s be clear as to where the experience and the maturity lies. And she’ll continue to do more interviews.”

“You’ve got to cut her a little bit of slack for the last three-and-a-half weeks, an unprecedented way to become the nominee for the Democratic Party,” Padilla continued. “She’s assembled the delegates to become the presumptive nominee. She has quickly vetted and selected a tremendous running mate in Governor Walz, preparing for the Democratic Convention in Chicago, and she’s stumping. She’s doing the day job and stumping in all the critical battleground states. So, we’ll get to the media interviews soon enough.”

Harris has not given an interview or press conference since Biden ended his reelection bid July 21. Harris and Democratic Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, who she selected as her running mate on Tuesday, are on a battleground-state trip.
