Actor Kevin Costner spoke Friday about the upheaval surrounding his $100,000,000 “Horizon: An American Saga” movie franchise as it seems to flop further into obscurity.
Costner, after giving up filming the final season of one of his greatest projects ever, “Yellowstone,” to embark on a multi-part movie franchise, doesn’t seem worried about the fairly obvious flop he has on his hands. The first installment of the saga brought in just $11 million its opening weekend despite the astronomical budget.
The second chapter, slated for theatrical release in August, was quickly pulled and will now premiere at the Venice Film Festival while “Horizon” chapter plays on streaming services.
Costner is still hopeful he has a gem in his hands, firmly believing in the concept of movies after his directorial debut “Dances With Wolves” was initially dismissed. “It’s stood the time of decades, now generations — and that’s how I try to make movies. That’s what I see for ‘Horizon,'” he told E! News. (RELATED: Kevin Costner Scrambles As His Biggest Project Collapses Around Him)
“I’ve faced life with people being dismissive of me,” he continued, adding, “but they can’t be dismissive of Horizon, because now it’s out of their hands. And they might point to the finish line — well, this is what it did at the box office — but I know that this movie is going to play for the next 50 years.”
“Horizon” is still sitting at around $32 million in global earnings thus far, well below the $38 million Costner put in of his own money. (RELATED: Luke Wilson Seemingly Drops Huge Spoiler On Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Movies)
“There’s a moment in time where you want [your children] to see this movie,” he stated. “To understand that this is what their [ancestors] went through. It’s not just a western, it’s a history of migration and what they had to do to survive. And I’m really proud of it.”
There are no firm updates on when “Horizon” will be available to people who already pay enough for streaming services. At the time of writing, it still costs around $20 to buy the movie and there are no rental options available.
