Magnolia Pictures & Magnet Releasing dropped the trailer for “Omni-Loop” Tuesday, taking a renowned movie concept to a whole new level.
Forget “Groundhog Day,” “50 First Dates,” and every other movie where the protagonist is stuck in a seemingly endless time-loop, “Omni-Loop” is redefining the genre. Starring Mary-Louise Parker and Ayo Edebiri, the story follows a woman who takes a pill once a week in order to relive the same week, over and over again.
The story follows Parker’s character, Zoya Lowe, a quantum physicist with a black hole growing inside her. She’s been stuck in the same loop so many times that she has no idea how long she’s been stuck, according to Deadline. It’s the week of her 55th birthday but also her final breath, with the outlet calling the plot a “poignant statement about life and mortality.”
But the trailer makes it look really, really funny, despite the darkness.
Parker has, and always will, be one of the few women in entertainment who can truly lead and command a screen while never coming across as masculine, mean, or even unreasonable. Her most notable role to-do was probably as Nancy Botwin in the hit series “Weeds” from entertainment mogul Jenji Kohan. (RELATED: ‘The Chosen’ Makes Huge Announcement On Season 5)
Both women are known for playing and creating complex female characters, which often don’t sit well with certain male demographics (or so I’ve observed).
The project is directed by HBO’s “Los Espooky’s” Bernardo Britto. Judging from the trailer, he’s done a beautiful job.
“Omni-Loop” drops in theaters and on digital on September 20.
