Anna Wintour stepped down as Vogue’s editor-in-chief and the search for her replacement has already begun, according to a report.
Wintour informed Vogue staff of the change in leadership Thursday, Variety confirmed. She will retain her roles as chief content officer for Condé Nast and global editorial director at Vogue. Wintour, a long-time staple at the outlet and the lead chairperson of the highly esteemed Met Gala, will remain in charge of Vogue’s worldwide output.

Wintour’s position as chief content officer of Condé Nast means she will still have authority over the company’s global brand, including Wired, Vanity Fair, GQ, AD, Condé Nast Traveler, Glamour, Bon Appétit, Tatler, The World of Interiors, Allure and others. The New Yorker is under David Remnick’s authority and will not be in Wintour’s purview.

Wintour stepped into her position at Vogue in 1988, taking the place of Grace Mirabella. She made immediate, bold moves that quickly reshaped the brand. Wintour’s first cover for the magazine featured model Michaela Bercu in a $50 pair of Guess jeans, marking the first occasion denim clothing was seen on the cover, according to People. Bercu donned a $10,000 Christian Lacroix sweater for an image taken by Peter Lindbergh, and with that singular cover, the history of the brand took a new course.

Wintour was the first to feature celebrities on the cover — a trend that quickly became the signature style of the publication and a tactic now embraced by others.
She assumed the post of Condé Nast’s artistic director in 2013 and became global content advisor in 2019. (RELATED: Vogue Editor Anna Wintour Spotted At White House — Could Melania Finally Get Her First Lady Cover?)
It is anticipated that Wintour will focus more on the magazine’s global output while leading all Condé Nast titles aside from The New Yorker. Her future involvement in the Met Gala is not yet clear.
